“For me personally, I never wanted to be in a box. I want to be able to make all different kinds of music because, that’s music. If I gotta study to do my interpretation of a Brazilian track, or world music, or my interpretation of a jazz track, I gotta study that.” – Tall Black Guy ‘Word is Bond’

Grindin’, Lioness, Kitten Jam and Behind The Front are proud to present a testament to Detroit City’s creative expression – Detroit producer, sample flipper and vinyl enthusiast Tall Black Guy aka Terrel Wallace. Tall Black Guy is making his debut appearance in Sydney at Civic Underground on the 27th of September, 2014. Joining Tall Black Guy on the night will be esteemed local DJ’s Edseven (Lioness) and Huwston, both with a penchant for eclectic soulful and rare beats. While future soul duo POLY and emerging hip hop/soul outfit YUM YUM will add a live music element to the show.

Born out of Detroit’s rich soul and jazz music history is a unique relationship deeply entangled between Detroit city and hip hop. Procuring influential rappers and producers is arguably a bi-product of the city’s precarious decay – a feeding ground for creative hip hop expression gripping music heads beyond its concrete jungle corrosion, spilling into playlists worldwide. One such producer is Tall Black Guy.

Tall Black Guy has established himself amongst his peers recognized for his unique uptake on sample flipping and most notably his chops on production with past collaborations including DJ Vadim and The Electric, Teri Tobin, Skyzoo and The Foreign Exchange to name a few. His hunger and deep knowledge of Motown and jazz records is in part responsible for his well crafted production skills winning the likes of Gilles Peterson having included Tall Black Guy in his prestigious Brownswood Bubblers No.7 compilation album known as a platform for unsigned artists without genre limitations imposed by major labels.

With a string of notable EPs, singles, remixes released through labels First Word Records, BSTRD Boots and his own label Tall Black Guy productions, his debut album 8 Miles to Moenart (2013) released on First Word Records, tells the tragic love story of Detroit City and its fast decline as seen through the eyes of Terrel Wallace – whose footsteps once devoured the streets with a thirst and breath of inspiration.

This show will see Sydney envelope itself in a bubble of hybrid sounds, fresh head-nodding beats and soulful electronica music unlike anything Sydney is familiar with. Gaining worldwide reputation as ‘everyone’s favourite producer’, Tall Black Guy will present Sydney fans a rare opportunity into his pervasive and influential music catalogue. This is a show that lovers of samples and beats cannot miss!
