For two decades Dwight Duncan better known to the world a Reggae Super Star Bushman has been entertaining the world with authentic musical styles. Born in the hills of St Thomas Jamaica, and raised in a Rastafarian culture from the age of two, his talent for singing was soon recognised and nurtured by his grade school music teacher. As a teenager he worked as a selector under the name Junior Melody for Black Star Line sound system, and took part in several local singing competitions and talent searches in and around St Thomas. Gaining a strong local fan base, Junior Melody began to voice dud-plates for local sound systems such as Lees Unlimited, Mello Construction, King Majesty and others. The rave reviews from the sound selectors and people in his community encouraged Junior Melody to take his talent to the next level, the studios of Kingston. The daily journey to Kingston was no joke for a struggling artist Junior Melody often had to hitchhike is way into the city to pursue his goal. He’s efforts were not in vain during an impromptu football game in the parking lot of Arrows studio, Steely made a comment about Junior Melody’s style of playing, his response was ‘I didn’t come studio to play ball I came to sing’. There and then he was asked to sing, Steely liked what he heard and offered him an audition at studio 2000 the very next day. The music pioneers Steely and Clevie recorded the first song with Junior Melody called “Grow You Natty”, which was followed by the hit “Call de Hearse”. With talks of an album the duo wished to change the name Junior Melody to Bushman. Initially Duncan unhappy with this name, he thought it somehow derogatory to him coming from country, however he research the name only to discover the ‘Bushman’ was an African name for ‘Medicine Man’.
The artist ‘Bushman’ emerged onto the Reggae market with his debut hit album “Nyah Man Chant” (1977). An album described in Rough Guide to Reggae ‘A good example of modern cultural singing as you could hope to find’. Bushman then moved on to the infamous King Jammys, who produced his next two albums “Total Commitment” (2000) and “Higher Ground” (2002). With three chart topping albums’ under his belt Bushman then teamed up with London based producers Stingray where they produced the album “A better Place” later called “My Meditation” (2003). 2004 saw the first album produced by Bushman called “Signs” this was a master piece with hits like ‘Light House’, ‘Down Town’, Creatures of the Night’ to name a few. Having matured with a wealth of experience Bushman’s next move was to form his own Music Company called “Burning Bushes Music inc” in 2005. Now a C.E.O his first independent album “Get It In Your Mind” was released in 2008. Later Bushman teamed up with power house Donavan Germain (Penthouse) where he co- produced a Tribute album to the legendary Peter Tosh called “Bushman Sings the Bush Doctor” (2011) This album smashed its way to the # 7 spot on the Reggae Billboard charts after just two weeks. With his upcoming album Bushman is looking forward to sharing his music with a new generation of Reggae Music lovers, and maintaining his position as one of the most authentic artist of his genre.
