LINE UPS!
WEEK 1 4TH JUNE:
CLEVER AUSTIN:
Clever Austin is the alias of internationally acclaimed Hiatus Kaiyote’s backbone, drummer and producer, Perrin Moss. After a hefty 8 years of beat making and drumming, Perrin Moss has curated his luscious back catalogue of beat compositions for a 8-piece band.
MFP is a Japanese producer who graced the Melbourne electronica scene with his remix of Hiatus Kaiyote’s Sphynx Gate on their Tawk Takeout remix album.
THE SEVEN UPS:
The Seven Ups are a 8-piece Afro/Funk band from Melbourne, Australia.
Deep Funk and Bad Afro! What started off as a few friends jamming on some Afrobeat in a tiny share house, soon grew into the 8-piece juggernaut, The Seven Ups. Drawing inspiration from legends such as Sly Stone, James Brown, The Funkees and of course Fela Kuti; the original 8-piece has become Melbourne’s favourite support band, playing a slot at pretty much every Funk show over the past few months.
WEEK 2 11TH JUNE:
DEMIAN:
Formed in late 2011 for the Victorian College of the Arts Improv Series(which they won), Demian is the result of two best friends, guitarist/composer Jamil Zacharia and beat producer Alejandro Abapo(Silent Jay), clashing their respective musical minds together and hitting on some brand new thoughts(or beats). it’s music to close your eyes to, music to crack your neck to, music that makes the world go round in ways you don’t expect to. Check!
SWOOPING DUCK:
Swooping Duck is a shifting collective drawing from the future soul, beats and fusion scene.
Including members from: Hiatus Kaiyote, Clever Austin, Demian and Kirkis.
Jilted, blunted instrumental experiments in hip-hop, electronic music and hyperbolic jazz.
WEEK 3 18TH JUNE:
UP UP AWAY:
6-piece Soul/Funk outfit Up Up Away play music to get you closer to the ground. They ooze soul, funk, blues and a little something in-between that’s their own secret ingredient. They know you want to get nasty, and they’re happy to provide a soundtrack of fat grooves, tasty hooks and cleverly crafted lyrics while you do.
EL MOTH:
Spawned from the remnants of an empty longneck of Melbourne Bitter, El Moth dusted its wings and flapped its way around the underground party scene in 2008. The boys quickly became known as one of the hottest party bands in town, providing the soundtrack to many a memorable night.
WEEK 4 25TH JUNE:
THE AGES:
The Ages aim is to play unmanufactured, colourful, timeless new music. The band was formed by musician & songwriter Astro, so named because the funk band he played in as a teen thought he was a freak from outer space.
Astro is a trumpet player & singer who has since recorded for Bertie Blackmann, Sally Seltman, Husky, Flap!, The Red Eyes, The Banging Rackettes, Blue King Brown, TZU, Gypsy Brown, Melodics, Hue Blanes & Brazil’s ‘Dois em Um’.
The other musicians from The Ages also play very diverse music around Melbourne, like Jazz, Indie Rock, Reggae, Electronic & African styles. These diverse influences have all somehow melted into Astro’s tunes, which have been refined over many years, and which aim straight for your soul. The songs often have open spaces that can go anywhere, and lead to moments of unrehearsed bliss.
The Ages are releasing their debut album late in 2013. Stay tuned.
GHOST ORKID:
Ghost Orkid is the lovechild of five Melbourne musicians from different projects and various styles. Formed in early 2012 they quickly found themselves playing the live circuit to an ever-increasing fan-base with their unique blend of sounds. Combining elements of soul, electronic, rock and hip hop, an emphasis on heavy groove and twisted beats with processed/dubbed vocals (all manipulated live from the stage), they have been turning heads and winning over ears in every venue and line-up they play.
