★ THE PERFORMANCES ★
☸ STRANGER COLE is, simply put, a giant of Reggae. He is one of the most important living links to the birth of the Jamaican sound with a career full of hits spanning all eras beginning with the proto-Ska “Rough and Tough” for Duke Reid in 1962. His mid-sixties rocksteady duets with Patsy Todd and Gladdy Anderson respectively are considered to be a high points of the genre. In 1968, Stranger Cole’s “Bangarang” with its choppy keyboard and one drop drumming marked the beginning of a new sound, Reggae. Stranger Cole’s voice is distinctive but his life performances are equally famous. Irrepressibly happy with boundless energy belying his 66 years on the planet, he connects with the audience like very few can. In 2010, he stole the show with his cameo performance in support of Dawn Penn at The Melbourne Ska Orchestra’s sold out “Roots or Rocksteady” concert and returned again to headline the 2015 Newport Ska and reggae festival. By popular demand, Stranger Cole returns to Australia to perform his biggest hits and some rarities. As he says, “MORE LIFE!”
☸ THE MOONHOPS were formed in 2005 by James Thompson and Venezuelan émigré Rodrigo Pino who shared an obsession with Jamaican rocksteady (the link between Ska and Reggae). The band have become a cult hit around Melbourne’s bohemian bars and warehouse parties. Almost single-handedly, they are responsible for the resurgence of interest in this once-lost music form with their peerless revival of the hypnotic interpretation of the Kingston sound in the mid-sixties. And have become the go to backing band for Jamaican foundation artists visiting Melbourne. Earlier this year they backed Keith and Tex at the Newport Ska, Reggae and Rocksteady Festival.
