SOUL CLEANSING SUMMER TOUR – KOOYEH
“HATCHED in the bracing air of NSW’s Blue Mountains and now burgeoning in Victoria’s Big Smoke, Kooyeh is a skankin’ young band that plays reggae originals spliced with seriously soulful, funky fills and jazzy solos.”
Kooyeh are about to embark on their second East Coast tour of Australia in February 2014. Jumping fresh off a Julian Marley support the boys are kicking off their 2014 tour with the Rainbow Serpent festival. Kooyeh have geared up to promote their debut album ‘Soul Cleansing’ and their second single release ‘Haven’t Found A Lady’ on their Soul Cleansing Summer Tour.
“Haven’t Found A Lady is a cheeky, uplifting break up song about herbal methods of coping, sang in a Cee Lo Green twang” – Beat Magazine
With the drop of their second single ‘Haven’t Found A Lady’ which exploded onto Melbourne’s live music scene late last year, this incredibly talented band of young virtuosos are destined for the world stage and glory… their vibe reigned supreme with their soul enriching musical talents, gorgeous stage presence, impeccable rhythm and ethereal energy.” With two singles off their debut album ‘Soul Cleansing’, Kooyeh has the music industry and fans alike ready to Cooee from the mountain-tops and get their reggae sway on.
The bands tight knitted attitude is reflected in their live shows, and audiences benefit from their synergy and their tight sound. Not a band to be easily labeled, their journey through reggae, soul, hip hop, dub and electronica keeps the group – and their growing crowds – on their toes.
With four vocalists, a horn section, Live dubs and a skankalicious riddim section, Kooyeh deliver a high energy show that keeps the dance floor buzzing as the spotlight sweeps between each of the singers, the riffing horn players, funky organ, bluesy guitar, and all the while the driving force of the bass.
REVIEW ‘THE AUSTRALIAN’ By Tony Hillier
“With four singers and as many horn players, in addition to a powerful engine room of bass, drums and keyboards, the Katoomba-bred Melbourne-based collective boasts deadly vocal and brass sections. Kooyeh’s music is taut, tight and terrific, indicative of an outfit that lives, works and plays together.
Considering it was recorded in a do-it-yourself home studio fashioned from mattresses and a walled mishmash of carpet, Soul Cleansing is an auspicious debut album.
The brass arrangements are consummate. Adroit use of trombones adds underpinning bass-led oomph to Judgement Day and Mountain Top. Muted trumpet and saxophone stabs lead to a well-constructed jazz outro in the equally outstanding Waves.
Changes in tempo and rhythm lend Keep on Waiting and Only One quirky feels, the latter coming within cooee of Cat Empire territory. Reverbed horns and deep bass dubify No Love and Woke Up in Babylon. Occasional bursts of rock guitar penetrate the brass. A rap distinguishes Crime, along with a serious theme.
Other songs cover reggae subject staples, with inevitable nods to Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff. If Kooyeh ever gets to record at Tuff Gong or any of the renowned Jamaican studios, it’ll be the toast of the reggae world at large.”
